He Was the Same Age as my Sister
I am almost sixty-seven years old , but every autumn ,when the weather changes in October,I feel like I am eleven again , because I feel like I am living the experience of the World War 2 again…
It was the last year of the horrible war , and it was cold wet autumn in Holland . There were no heaters , no wood to light , no lights to make you feel warm , and of course , we didn’t have electricity…
It wasn't that great dinner , because we onlt could get food from the central kitchen , that cooks food and distrubes it on us. The cold soup was made of potato and cabbage leaves , cooked in water without any salt or flavors…
On that October day , it was beginning to get dark , the German trucks closed off our street , so noone could get out of the neighbourhood , s they alwayz did . Some German soldiers started to look for men from house to house .
Raus!Raus! It was the German expression to make us get out of our houses so they can search easily , they looked everywhere , attics , basements, even they searched inside our closests . While we were running away we forgat to take our jackets and coats with us , and I huged my little brother and that’s what made me feel warm…
Our street was full with women and children , and because the german soldiers didn’t understand Dutch , that gave us freedom to talk whatever we want , eventhough we kept our voices low. You could hear jokes every where . well , I didn’t understand what they were talkin about , but I liked to share laughs with them. The news was exchanged , the soldiers were in Maastrich!! Why won't they come north ???
