Shakira's [/color][/size][url=https://algassania2.mam9.com/wiki/Debut_album][u][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00]debut album[/u][/color][/size][/url][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00], [/color][/size][url=https://algassania2.mam9.com/wiki/Magia_(Shakira_album)][i][u][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00]Magia[/i][/u][/color][/size][/url][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00], was recorded with [/color][/size][url=https://algassania2.mam9.com/wiki/Sony_Music][u][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00]Sony Music[/u][/color][/size][/url][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00] in 1991, when she was only fourteen years old. Though it fared well on Colombian radio and gave the young Shakira much exposure, the album did not fare well commercially, selling fewer than a thousand copies.[/color][/size][url=https://algassania2.mam9.com/l%20cite_note-rollingstone-10][u][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00][11][/u][/color][/size][/url][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00] After the poor acclaim of [i]Magia[/i], Shakira's label urged her back into the studio to release a follow up with more hit songs, to give the album potential. The album [/color][/size][url=https://algassania2.mam9.com/wiki/Peligro_(Shakira_album)][i][u][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00]Peligro[/i][/u][/color][/size][/url][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00] was released in 1993, but Shakira was not pleased with the final result, mainly taking issue with the production. The album was better received than [i]Magia[/i], though it was also considered a commercial failure, due to Shakira's refusal to advertise it. Although little known outside of her native Colombia, Shakira was invited to perform at Chile's [/color][/size][url=https://algassania2.mam9.com/wiki/Vi%C3%B1a_del_Mar_International_Song_Festival][u][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00]Viña del Mar International Song Festival[/u][/color][/size][/url][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00] in February 1993. The festival gave aspiring Latin American singers a chance to perform their songs, and the winner was then chosen by a panel of judges. Shakira performed the ballad "Eres" ("You Are") and won the trophy for third place. One of the judges who voted for her to win was then 20-year-old [/color][/size][url=https://algassania2.mam9.com/wiki/Ricky_Martin][u][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00]Ricky Martin[/u][/color][/size][/url][size=25][color:00e5=#00ff00].
