When a Roman baby was born a relative put the baby at the feet of the father to accept it into the family .
The oldest man in the family was the head of the family woman were important because they managed the house and household finances. They did not have many rights but later they were allowed to own lands , have some jobs and manage some businesses . but they couldn't hold jobs in the government or to became lawyers or teacher.
Girls and boys wore BULLA that protected them from evil .Girls wore it until marriage and boys until they became citizen. The family had a big celebration on this day . Greek teacher introduced the Romans to literature and philosophy .
School wasn't free . Parents taught their children at home .
Rich families sent their children to schools at age seven to learn basic subjects. Girls didn’t continued , they stayed at home to learn how to be good wives and mothers . But boys continued their education to became lawyers or worked in government .
Children played with friends ,pets , or toys such as marbles and knucklebones .
Dogs were the favorite pets . Some children had monkeys.
