WHEN A Roman baby was born ,a relative put the baby at the feet of the father.
The father picked up the baby to accept it into the family.
The baby was named nine days after birth.
The oldest man in the family the father , the grandfather or an uncle was the "head of the family"
However , women managed the household finances.
In the early years of ancient Rome women didn't have so many rights.
In later years , they had more rights. They were allowed to have some types of jobs , but the still not allowed to hold jobs in government .
Girls and boys wore a special locket , called a bulla , around their necks . a girls wore the bulla until her wedding and the boy until he became a citizen. The family had a big celebration on this day.
Greek teachers influenced Roman education.
School was not free, in poor families parents taught their children at home.
Rich families sent their children to school to learn basic subjects. Mothers taught the girls how to be good wives mothers .
Rich boys continued studying in formal schools or with tutors .
Children played with friends, pets. They played with toys such as hobbyhorses , stilts and marbles. Girls played with dolls.
Dogs were the favorite pets. They had some other pets such as pigeons, ducks and geese. [/center]
