ROBIN HOOD is the most popular folk hero of all times. The story has reached every corner of the world. It has been made into movies and cartoons, even though it is more than 600 years old.
Everyone knows Robin Hood's friends, Little John, Will Scarlet, and Brother Tuck, besides the infamous Sheriff of Nottingham. Sherwood Forest is where most of Robin's adventures took place in England.
By tradition, Robin Hood was an outlaw who was the leader of a group of men who robbed the rich and gave to the poor. He and his men lived in a secret place in the forest and fought against the evil Sheriff because he was taking money and land from the poor peasants to give to the king.
Unfortunately, there is almost no evidence that Robin Hood really existed. Thirteen-century ballads, fourteen-century chronicles a sixteen-century History of Great Britain, all talk about him but none of them cites the sources they used.
In the 1800s and 1900s, historians found two Robin Hoods who lived in the fourteenth century.
Later, other historians found several different Hoods living in different parts of England. However, Robin was a popular first name and Hood was a fairly common surname at that time. It seems that by 1337, the story of Robin Hood was well established so most probably he lived around 1200.
Today the legend of Robin Hood has turned Sherwood Forest into large tourist attraction. There is Nottingham castle which still remembers the time of Robin Hood, the forest which has a centre with an attractive display and shop, and where tourists can take pleasant walks. But the favourite tourist attraction is the nearby Edwinstowe village where according to tradition Robin Hood married Lady Marion.
There are many versions of this well-known tale but the legend is the same Robin Hood was the most loved thief.
