Would you ever go without sleep for three whole
days? Susan Butcher has, and that isn't all she has
done to follow her dreams. For many years, Susan
wanted to enter the Iditarod. Because this race took
place in icy Alaska, she had to train very hard. She
ran, rode her bicycle, and lifted weights. She also
went sledding with her dogs about 70 miles [112.6km] a day. She
drove her sled through snowstorms and over thin ice. Susan won that
racein1986,but she wasn't satisfied. She went back to race again. Has
she repeated that incredible win? The answer is yes------four times in all!
Susan's love of adventure and her determination have helped her win.
