[color:2a4e=black][font:2a4e=Calibri]In Rome: Boys: The head of the family was a male.

[color:2a4e=black][font:2a4e=Calibri]A boy became a citizen at age 16 or 17. Boys from rich families went at school at age 7 and learned the basic subject. They continued at school. They became lawyers or worked in government.

[font:2a4e=Calibri][color:2a4e=black]Girls: [color:2a4e=black]They managed the house and household finances. First, they didn’t have many rights but later, they had more rights. They are allowed to own land. They could have some types of jobs but they are not allowed to work as lawyers or to work in government. They didn’t continue in school after learning the basic subject and they stayed at home. Their mothers taught them how to be good wives and mothers.

[color:2a4e=black][font:2a4e=Calibri]In Maya: boys: the head of the family was a male. The men worked hard to support their family and to pay taxes to the government. When boys were 5 years old, the Maya tied a small white bead to the top of his head. A priest cut the beads from the boy’s head when he was 12 or 13. They painted themselves black until they married. They learned to hunt and fish. They joined the army to learn about war and fighting at age 17.

[font:2a4e=Calibri][color:2a4e=black]Girls: [color:2a4e=black]women in Maya society cooked, made cloths and clothing, and took care of children. When girls were 5, the Maya tied a red shell around her waist. Her mother cut this shell from the girl’s waist when she was 12 or 13. They learned how to cook and weave.

[color:2a4e=black][font:2a4e=Calibri]Now: Boys: they played with war games. They joined the army to learn about war and fighting. They married at age 30.

[font:2a4e=Calibri][color:2a4e=black]Girls: [color:2a4e=black]they played with dolls. They married at age 25 or 26. Women cook and weave and take care of children. They have the same rights as the boys. They learn in school as the boys. There mothers teach them how to be good wives and mothers.
