[b]As a striker with Spalletti[/b]
Roma's new coach for the [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serie_A_2005-06]2005-06[/url] season, [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luciano_Spalletti]Luciano Spalletti[/url],
went with a 4–2–3–1 formation, during which Totti would not remain
forward waiting for crosses or passes, instead going back to take the
ball, and thus creating spaces for the attacking midfielders. In this
new position, Totti began to score more frequently than the past and
scored 15 goals in 24 matches, during which the team won 11 consecutive
games.
On 19 February 2006, Totti suffered a fracture of his left [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibula]fibula[/url] and ligament damage during a match against [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empoli_F.C.]Empoli[/url] after being fouled by [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Vanigli]Richard Vanigli[/url]. A metal plate had been attached to his ankle during surgery, but
doctors decided not to operate again and remove it following Totti's

award as the top European goalscorer. Despite being the highest active
goalscorer in Serie A, he was not among the finalists for the 2007 [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Player_of_the_Year]FIFA World Player of the Year[/url][sup][url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francesco_Totti#cite_note-6][/url][/sup] due to his national team absence, though he was nominated for the 2007 [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballon_d%27Or]Ballon d'Or[/url], finishing tenth in the voting.
Totti scored his 200th goal with Roma in a 4-0 [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coppa_Italia]Coppa Italia[/url] win over [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torino_F.C.]Torino[/url] on 16 January 2008. He was named the [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_Footballer_of_the_Year]Italian Footballer of the Year[/url] for the fifth time in his career on 28 January. He suffered a season-ending injury to his right knee during a 1-1 draw with [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.S._Livorno_Calcio]Livorno[/url] on 19 April. agreed a new five-year contract deal, which would keep him at the club

Serie A defeats which saw Spalletti resign after his four year reign to
