The leaning tower of Pisa started construction in 1173, and its
construction started off with problems. The foundation was only at a
depth of 3 meters. Problems with the foundation halted construction
after only three floors were built. In 1275, three more stories were
added. Then, in 1284, another six stories were added. This gradual
construction helped the building settle into the foundation. The
subsoil foundation shifts and heavy marble of the tower caused it to
have its familiar lean, 14 feet out of line. The tower was closed in
1990 because of danger of collapse. An 11-year project was completed in
2001 which reduced the tilt by 16 inches. The tower reopened, and you
can pay 15 euros to see the sights at the top. The tower is located in
the Piazza dei Miracolo, where it stands near the Cathedral, Baptistry,
and Monumental Cemetery. Everyone has to try the familiar cheesy pose
of holding up the tower. Seriously, I wonder if the place would be
popular if they did finally manage to straighten it up.
